A workshop hosted by Barbara Arneil was held April 12, 2017, at the Liu Institute, UBC on the question of ‘What is a Colony? What is Colonization?’
A distinguished group of international scholars were invited to consider the definition of colonization from multiple interdisciplinary perspectives.
This workshop was one of the first to bring together scholars studying external or settler colonies with scholars studying the history of internal colonies in Europe to solve a multitude of social problems, including labour colonies for the unemployed to farm colonies for the mentally ill and disabled.
The key questions addressed in this workshop was whether there is something common to these different kinds of colonies and colonization and if so is it possible, even necessary to distinguish ‘the colonial’ from ‘the imperial’ in the history of ideas and practices?
