 stinguished Speaker.</p></blockquote><p>Dr. Weiss\, who is the David M. Lam
 pton Professor of China Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced Interna
 tional Studies\, will present a lecture titled "<strong>A World Safe for Au
 tocracy? The Domestic Politics of Chinese Foreign Policy</strong>."</p><p>B
 eneath Xi Jinping’s grand slogans of a “Chinese dream” and a “shared future
  for humankind\,” there are internal tensions\, debates\, and competing int
 erests that continue to shape China’s approach to the world. Through the le
 ns of domestic politics\, nationalism\, and regime insecurity in China\, We
 iss will examine the evolving and contested landscape of what “China” wants
 . The talk will conclude with policy implications for the United States\, p
 rospects for peaceful coexistence\, and the future of international order.<

 em></p><p><strong>ABOUT THE SPEAKER</strong></p><p><a href="https://www.jes
 sicachenweiss.com/">Jessica Chen Weiss</a> is the David M. Lampton Professo
 r of China Studies at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced Internati
 onal Studies (SAIS) and nonresident senior fellow at the Asia Society Polic
 y Institute Center for China Analysis. From August 2021 to July 2022\, she 
 served as senior advisor to the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff at the U.
 S. State Department on a Council on Foreign Relations Fellowship for Tenure
 d International Relations Scholars (IAF-TIRS). Weiss is the author of Power
 ful Patriots: Nationalist Protest in China’s Foreign Relations (Oxford Univ
 ersity Press\, 2014). Her research appears in International Organization\, 
 China Quarterly\, International Studies Quarterly\, Journal of Conflict Res
 olution\, Security Studies\, Journal of Contemporary China\, and Review of 
 International Political Economy.</p><p>With commentary in the New York Time
 s\, Washington Post\, Foreign Affairs\, Los Angeles Times\, and the Ezra Kl
 ein show\, Weiss was profiled in the New Yorker and named one of Prospect M
 agazine's Top Thinkers for 2024. Weiss was previously the Michael J. Zak Pr
 ofessor for China and Asia-Pacific Studies in the Department of Government 
 at Cornell University and an assistant professor at Yale University. Born a
 nd raised in Seattle\, Washington\, she received her Ph.D. from the Univers
 ity of California\, San Diego\, where her dissertation won the American Pol
 itical Science Association award for best dissertation in international rel
 ations\, politics\, and law.</p><hr /><h4>About the Mark Zacher Distinguish
 ed Speaker Lecture</h4><p>The <a href="https://politics.ubc.ca/news-events/
 mark-zacher-distinguished-speaker-lecture/">Mark Zacher Distinguished Speak
 er Lecture</a> was created by members of the Department of Political Scienc
 e\, with the support of Mark Zacher’s family and many of his former student
 s\, to honour his contribution to the teaching\, understanding and scholars
 hip of international affairs.</p><p>We invite one prominent scholar\, leade
 r\, or senior elected official who has made significant contributions to th
 e field of international affairs every year to give a series of lectures\, 
 and to meet with students\, faculty\, and community members.</p>
