UBC Political Science is delighted to host Dr. Michael Barnett as this year’s Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker.

Dr. Barnett is a University Professor of International Affairs and Political Science at George Washington University. His work spans the Middle East, humanitarianism, global governance, global ethics, and the United Nations, with numerous influential books including Eyewitness to a Genocide, Empire of Humanity, and Rules for the World.

Dr. Barnett will present a lecture titled “The End of Humanitarianism.”

We are witnessing the end of humanitarianism as we know it. Although the Trump administration’s beheading of USAID and humanitarian assistance have grabbed the headlines, various trends in the areas of security, political economy, and humanity over the the 21st century have brought humanitarianism to a transformational moment, but with an uncertain future.

The Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker Lecture will begin at 6:00 pm with a reception to follow at 7:15 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm.

About the Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker Lecture

The Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker Lecture was created by members of the Department of Political Science, with the support of Mark Zacher’s family and many of his former students, to honour his contribution to the teaching, understanding and scholarship of international affairs.

We invite one prominent scholar, leader, or senior elected official who has made significant contributions to the field of international affairs every year to give a series of lectures, and to meet with students, faculty, and community members.
