 l Science is delighted to host Professor Kathryn Stoner of Stanford as this
  year's Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker. She will give a public lecture t
 itled\, "Russia's War on Ukraine: What You Should Know and Why You Should (
 Still) Care."</h3><p><em>The Mark Zacher Distinguished Speaker Lecture will
  begin at 6:00 pm with a reception to follow at 7:15 pm. Doors open at 5:30
  pm.  </em></p><p>Why did Russia's President\, Vladimir Putin decide to inv
 ade Ukraine in February of 2022? What does he hope to gain and what has he 
 lost so far? What could bring this conflict to an end? Why should we all co
 ntinue to pay close attention to Russia's war in Ukraine?</p><p>Professor S
 toner will discuss why the invasion happened\, what Putin wants and what da
 mage he has inflicted on Ukraine while also unraveling Russia's own economi
 c and political evolution over the last 30 years.</p><p>Professor Stoner's 
 most recent book is <em>Russia Resurrected: Its Power and Purpose in a New 
 Global Order</em> (Oxford University Press\, 2021).</p><h4>More about Profe
 ssor Kathryn Stoner</h4><p>Professor Kathryn Stoner is the Mosbacher Direct
 or at the Center on Democracy\, Development and the Rule of Law\, and a Sen
 ior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies\, Prof
 essor of Political Science (by courtesy)\, Stanford University and Senior F
 ellow (by courtesy) at the Hoover Institution. Prior to coming to Stanford 
 in 2004\, she was on the faculty at Princeton University for nine years\, j
 ointly appointed to the Department of Politics and the Princeton School for
  International and Public Affairs (formerly the Woodrow Wilson School).</p>
 <p>In addition to many articles and book chapters on contemporary Russia\, 
 she is the author or co-editor of six books. Her most recent book is <em><a
  href="https://global.oup.com/academic/product/russia-resurrected-978019086
 0714?cc=ca&lang=en&">Russia Resurrected: Its Power and Purpose in a New Glo
 bal Order</a> </em>(Oxford University Press\, 2021)\, which won the Russia 
 and Eurasia Program\, Fletcher School award for best book on US-Russian Rel
 ations in 2022.</p><p>She holds a BA and MA in Political Science from the U
 niversity of Toronto\, and a PhD in Government from Harvard University.</p>

 cher Distinguished Speaker Lecture was created by members of the Department
  of Political Science\, with the support of Mark Zacher’s family and many o
 f his former students\, to honour his contribution to the teaching\, unders
 tanding and scholarship of international affairs. Annually\, we invite one 
 prominent scholar\, leader\, or senior elected official who has made signif
 icant contributions to the field of international affairs to give a series 
 of lectures\, and to meet with students\, faculty\, and community members.<
