Public Notes

In recent years there has been growing public concern about the erosion of democracy and liberal values and the threats posed by allegedly “fascist” or “populist” movements and parties. These concerns have inspired new work in the social sciences to understand whether this erosion is taking place; its causes; and to interrogate the growth of “populism”, increased cynicism and distrust, and the explosion of conspiracy and misinformation. In this course, we examine this through Hannah Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism and supplemental readings. Along the way, we focus on how to interrogate arguments and evidence used by the authors we read, building the capability in students to write their own research papers.
