We invite UBC Political Science and International Relations alumni, students and faculty to this limited-seating event featuring our panelists for an intimate and lively evening of discussion. Light refreshments will be available.
ABOUT THE PANELLISTS
Christine Boyle was elected to Vancouver City Council in 2018 as a member of OneCity Vancouver. She is passionate about tackling inequality, contributing to climate solutions, and deepening democratic engagement.
Councilor Boyle was born and raised on unceded Coast Salish territory in Vancouver. She has spent much of her life organizing around issues of social and environmental justice, locally and globally. Councilor Boyle spent many years supporting progressive local governance and leading strategic communications at the Columbia Institute’s Centre for Civic Governance. During that time, she also supported the development of GreenJobs BC, bringing together environmental, labour, and community leaders to advocate for a just transition to a green economy.
Councilor Boyle also spent many years in front-line social service roles at First United Church in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and at Grandview/?Uuqinak’uuh Elementary School in East Vancouver. She has an BSc in Global Resource Systems (focused on Urban Agriculture and First Nations Studies) from the University of British Columbia, and an MA in Religious Leadership for Social Change from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California
Kate Harland works at the Canadian Climate Institute, where she currently leads research on energy affordability, building heat decarbonization and utility regulation on the path to net zero.
Her previous roles include climate policy and economic analysis for the UK/EU governments, managing low-carbon technology trials for Transport for London, working on low-carbon vehicle strategies for Nissan, and acting as Research Lead for the Chief Science Advisor to the New Zealand Prime Minister. She is also a seasoned reviewer, evaluating potential innovation projects for their societal, environmental, ethical, and economic implications. She holds a Masters of Science from Cambridge University (UK) and training from Simon Fraser University’s Master of Public Policy program.
