Alum Nikki Hill named one of Canada’s most powerful women in 2023 by WXN
Alum Nikki Hill (BA’97) was awarded the Canadian Tire impact award in recognition of her charity leadership. Between 2018 and 2022, Nikki served as the founder and Co-Chair of United Way’s Period Promise campaign and has since served as the chair of the provincial government’s Period Poverty Task Force. Her work has led to significant federal and provincial public policy changes.
Alum Mellissa Fung, acclaimed war correspondent and documentary filmmaker, named to 2024 Order of Canada
Mellissa is an acclaimed veteran correspondent, author and documentary filmmaker. Through her riveting films, she has become a powerful advocate for women and girls in war-torn countries, giving a voice to victims and calling for greater international protection.

Haley Magrill’s project investigates legal constraints to misinformation legislation in five democracies and provides a comparative analysis for potential Canadian responses to social media misinformation. A key question of the project is how to balance free speech and preventing harmful misinformation spread.

Professor Stewart Prest says whether local politicians respond to global issues depends on the context and the importance of maintaining working relationships. He says that “conflict involves a battle for global public opinion” and while championing a cause outside one’s daily work may win applause from some contituents, it may alienate others.
