Calvin is an M.A. student in the Department of Political Science. He is also an Institute of Asian Research Fellow, working with the Centre for Southeast Asia Research (CSEAR) and the UBC Myanmar Initiative under the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.


Research

Calvin’s research focuses on state-society relations and political regimes in Southeast Asian countries. He is currently working with Dr. Kai Ostwald to examine authoritarian resilience and cultural politics in Myanmar. His research is driven by the question: how can culture and socio-political identities explain the military’s political longevity and hegemony? A member of the Myanmar diaspora, Calvin is also interested in studying diasporic activism within Myanmar’s pro-democracy movement, and its challenges in Canada.
