  • Applicants should be familiar with Arts Faculty Requirements and the Political Science Program as explained in the UBC Calendar. Students should also be familiar with the information on our website. Detailed course descriptions for Winter 2021-22 course offerings will be posted on the Political Science website by June 1st 2021.

    Program Requirements

    If you are applying to the MAJOR or HONOURS Program for September 2021 entry, you must meet the following requirements by August 31, 2021.

    • be enrolled in the Faculty of Arts;
    • have completed at least 54 credits of course work;
    • have completed a minimum of 12 credits from 100 and 200 level Political Science courses, which must include POLI 100/101/110/240;
    • have attained the minimum grade-point average established by the Department (varies annually, but is typically around 65%).

    Please note that admission is not automatic to either the MAJOR, COMBINED or HONOURS program in Political Science. Due to a limited number of spaces, some applicants who satisfy the minimum prerequisites may not be admitted.

    For HONOURS Applicants

    If applying to the HONOURS Program, you will be asked to include your resume and a 250-word supplementary statement. Topics to consider: your specific interests in political science, your interests outside the discipline (including your outside reading), and your ultimate career plans. This information is an essential part of your application. If you are not admitted to the HONOURS Program you will automatically be considered for the MAJOR Program. (See the UBC Calendar under Political Science for a description of the HONOURS Program and the minimum qualifications for applying.)

  • Prospective students applying to the Political Science program option must first complete an online application to UBC (Vancouver Campus). Your 8-digit UBC Student Number can be found with your online application. Do not use your Campus-Wide Login (CWL) username.
  • Please provide an email that you check on a regular basis. This does not have to be a school email.
  • Do you want to be added to the Political Science internal undergraduate listserv? This is how we will notify you about new courses, course changes, special lectures, internships, job opportunities, and social events happening within the department.
  • Note: Admission to the Combined Major programs is subject to the admission restrictions and application processes that pertain to both the Majors. For POLI / ECON, you are required to submit applications to both departments.
  • Accepted file types: pdf.
  • In 250 words or less, please write a supplementary statement.   • If you have not completed the pre requisites at the end of 2020W Term 2 (if you will be fulfilling your course and/or credit requirements during the Summer Session or if you are currently applying to be admitted to the Faculty of Arts), please provide an explanation below. In this case, the final decision on your application will be made only after you notify the Department (via email at poli.advising@ubc.ca) that you have completed the requirements as promptly as possible in July or August.
