Apply now for a fully funded PhD position in Political Theory at UBC Political Science

The University of British Columbia is offering two fully funded PhD positions in Political Theory. These positions are equally ideal for young scholars interested in foundational problems in political theory and for those eager to explore cutting-edge questions in the emerging areas of the discipline.

We are particularly excited to recruit students who wish to engage deeply with one of two primary research areas.

The first area focuses on critical and realist theories of democracy, with particular attention to power inequalities stemming from historical and current processes and experiences of injustice and marginalization (i.e. settler colonialism, absence of children in democratic imaginaries, ongoing marginalizations based on gender, race, and ability). This area is open to students who are passionate about rethinking the foundations of democratic theory and aiming to develop more grounded theories and processes of democracy.

The second research areas of interest are the history of political thought and historically grounded studies in democratic theory, with special interests in topics such as the global history of democratic thought, empire and anticolonial thought, popular sovereignty, Indian political thought, and comparative political theory.  This position is open to students interested in the historical formation of political ideas as well as to those who are keen to explore contemporary implications of political problems with deeper historical roots.

At UBC, you’ll work with leading scholars in a vibrant, intellectually stimulating environment. You’ll receive full funding, including tuition coverage and a living stipend, along with opportunities for research, teaching, and professional development. Located in Vancouver, UBC offers a unique academic experience in one of the world’s most beautiful and diverse cities.

If you are interested in these research areas, please contact Professor Afsoun Afsahi (afsoun.afsahi@ubc.ca) and/or Professor Nazmul Sultan (nazmul.sultan@ubc.ca)
