Prof. Xiaojun Li

Congratulations to UBC Political Science Professor Xiaojun Li, who has received SSHRC funding for his work on understanding misinformation and preconceived biases circulating in traditional and social media regarding perceptions of the United States and China, worth over $70,000.

Prof. Xiaojun Li’s project will seek to investigate the significance of American and Chinese citizens’ intellectual humility in regards to perceptions of both nations, how that influences their reception of contradictory information, and whether these intellectual humility qualities that transcend cultural, economic, and political contexts as distinct as those in China and the United States. SSHRC funding will go towards constructing and delivering large-scale nationally representative surveys in China and the United States, as well as two follow-up surveys in the subsequent year. The project aims to shed light on the critical role of an intellectually humble citizenry in maintaining peaceful coexistence between two competing great powers, and deliver evidence to guide scholarly debates, classroom teaching, policy dialogues, and public discourse through at least two published articles.
