On November 28, 2016, our friend and colleague, Professor Emeritus Jean Laponce, passed away. Jean joined our Department in 1956, as the first Full-Time political scientist, and taught here until 1991. Jean left an indelible mark not only within our own community, but on the broader Political Science community. In particular, his service within the International Political Science Association (IPSA) and his commitment to international dialogue is being remembered and celebrated as monumental. Jean was interested in numerous areas of political science, and he established his expertise in linguistic politics, with remarkable works such as Langue et territoire (1990) and Loi de Babel et autres régularités du rapport entre langue et politique (2006). His academic contributions were prolific (see publication list below), and his service to the field was immense. He was a member of the Royal Society of Canada, and he will be remembered for his warm personality, modesty, and tireless energy. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Iza – a former political science librarian at UBC, and his family. We have all lost a remarkable political scientist, and he will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues. The Department will be organizing a memorial event in his honour, and to celebrate his life and work in the spring of 2017.

Jean served as President of the Canadian Political Science Association (1972-73), and President of the International Political Science Association (1973-76). His IPSA presidency helped to establish IPSA’s journal, International Political Science Review (IPSR), and he contributed to the development of political science in the Soviet Union when he decided to hold the 1979 World Congress in Moscow. As a founder and the longest-serving editor of IPSR, Jean is remembered for “his openness to new ideas and sources of knowledge, while maintaining his commitment to high standards of scholarship”. The IPSR’s Meisel-Laponce Award celebrates the commitment that Jean and colleague John Meisel made to the journal, when it is awarded every four years to the best article published in IPSR. IPSA praised Jean, a former member of IPSA Executive Committee, with helping to build bridges between East and West, for maintaining personal friendships in countries around the world, and for being an invaluable source of knowledge of the inner workings of the organization. Together with Jean Gottmann, Jean created two IPSA research committees, political geography (RC 15), and the politics of language (RC50).
