A special make-up in-person graduation ceremony was held to celebrate the achievements and resiliency of the Class of 2020 and 2021, who completed their degrees during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prof. Antje Ellermann awarded the Charles H. Levine Memorial Book Prize
“Prof. Antje Ellermann offers a fascinating and insightful investigation into the diversity of immigration policy choices, and the causes of policy change or persistence over time and across jurisdictions. A masterful achievement and a must-read for immigration scholars, political and policy scientists, institutionalists, and policy makers,” from the official announcement.
Prof. Xiaojun Li awarded SSHRC funding for project on intellectual humility and US-China relations
Over $70,000 in SSHRC funding has been awarded to Prof. Xiaojun Li for his project on media biases and disinformation, intellectual humility, and its influence on US-China perceptions, which will be investigated through a series of extensive surveys in both countries.
Professor Barbara Arniel elected to Royal Society of Canada
UBC Political Science Professor Barbara Arneil is one of thirteen UBC faculty members have been announced by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) as new Fellows and as new Members of the College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.
Shanghai Rankings lists UBC Political Science as top Political Science department in Canada
Shanghai Rankings also listed UBC Political Science in the top 25 of political science departments globally.
Prof. Yves Tiberghien appointed to Indo-Pacific Advisory Committee
Congratulations to Prof. Yves Tiberghien on being selected to be a part of the Indo-Pacific Advisory Committee alongside other UBC and SPPGA faculty members. The newly established committee aims to help establish Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy in regards to regional partnerships, trade diversification, action on climate change and regional security, and tools for engagement.

PhD Candidate Martina Zago receives SSHRC funding for project investigating historical European definitions of “civilization”
Martina’s dissertation explores European debates over civilization, barbarism, and savagery in relation to extra-European states and peoples during the age of ‘modern Orientalism,’ 1798-1945. She argues some of the most interesting meaning-makers in this context were visual artists who took to heart the task of defining and contesting the boundaries of what was then considered civilized, barbarous, and savage.
Prof. Jenny Peterson awarded funding for Intergenerational Connections & Futures for Afghan Scholars Program
Part of the $1.096 million dollar grant from the International Development Research Centre will go towards connecting Afghan students with Afghan scholars and activists to discuss possible ‘pathways’ for a socio-politically forward looking Afghanistan through Dr. Jenny Peterson’s “Intergenerational Connections and Futures” project.
