We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Alan Jacobs has been selected as the next Head of the Department of Political Science. Dr. Jacobs will start his three-year term as Department Head on July 1, 2022.
Professor Alan Jacobs teaches and conducts research in the fields of comparative political economy, public policy, political behavior, and qualitative and mixed methodology.
His first book, Governing for the Long Term: Democracy and the Politics of Investment (2011) was a co-winner of the APSA award for the Best Book in Comparative Politics, winner of the APSA award for the Best Book Developing or Applying Qualitative Methods, and winner of the IPSA prize for the Best Book in Comparative Policy and Administration. His work has also appeared in leading journals in the field, including the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, and the British Journal of Political Science.
Professor Jacobs has been PI on a SSHRC Insight Grant, a SSHRC Standard Research Grant, a Hampton Fund Grant, and a DAAD grant, and has received fellowships from the European University Institute and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Within the Department of Political Science, Jacobs has served as the Graduate Advisor (2017-2021), a member of the Executive Committee, chair of the Awards Committee, and Speaker Series Coordinator. He also co-hosts the Scope Conditions podcast with Prof. Yang-Yang Zhou and has coordinated our 2022 Distinguished Speaker Series.
We would also like to take this moment to thank outgoing Department Head Dr. Richard Price for his tremendous service to the department over the past three years. Dr. Price led the department through unprecedented challenges presented by COVID including the transition into and out of remote learning. All the while, he has also been an incredible advocate for the department’s students, faculty, and staff.
