PhD student Simon Beaudoin explores global governance of biodiversity in new book

Congratulations to PhD student Simon Beaudoin has published his first book, Gouvernance mondiale de la biodiversité: Évolution et enjeux, with the Presses de l’Université du Québec.

Co-authored with Laura Fequino and Annie Chaloux, the book presents the pillars of global governance of biodiversity, surveying its history, the challenges faced and lessons we can learn for the future. It explores a few key questions on the topic, including:

  • What are the main causes of biodiversity loss?
  • What perspectives and decisions have shaped the global governance of biodiversity?
  • Who are the key players and what roles have they played over time?
  • What are the contemporary issues?
  • What opportunities can be seized to reverse this loss of biodiversity?

To answer these questions, the book draws on a series of interviews conducted during and after the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), held in Canada in December 2022, and at COP 16, held in Colombia in October 2024. It also reviews the scientific literature and official documentation of numerous international organisations.

The book offers an up-to-date review of knowledge biodiversity, a rich repertoire of lessons from the history of biodiversity governance, and recommendations for both future research and policies.
