Prof. Andrew Owen appointed as Associate Dean Academic in the Faculty of Arts

Congratulations to Professor Andrew Owen on his appointment to the role of Associate Dean Academic!

Andrew Owen

Professor Owen is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the UBC Department of Political Science, where he served for several years on the Undergraduate Program Committee and later as Director of Undergraduate Programs (2019-2023). He developed and co-led an Indigenous Initiatives in Teaching Cohort in Political Science, designed workshops for Teaching Assistants, and led a comprehensive review of the department’s calendar entries and shepherded curriculum changes through the necessary approvals.

At the Faculty level, Dr. Owen’s service contributions include his work on the Arts Breadth Requirements renewal process (2017-2022), initially as a member of the Working Group and later as part of the Leadership Group, as well as his work on the Advisory Committee for Arts Co-Operative Education, the Canadian Studies Coordinating Committee, and the Teaching & Learning Working Group for the Faculty of Arts Strategic Plan.

Dr. Owen also served on the University’s Advisory Committee on Generative AI in Teaching and Learning and he is currently leading a TLEF-funded project examining academic integrity in the context of generative AI and written assessment. Given his disciplinary interests in research design, quantitative methods and experimental research in political psychology, Dr. Owen also recently co-developed an Extended Learning micro-certificate on Applied Survey Research.

Dr. Owen will join the Dean’s Office this summer for a five-year term starting in July 2025. In the role of Associate Dean Academic, Dr. Owen will provide leadership and strategic direction on matters of academic policy, academic integrity, student academic discipline, curriculum, and first year and interdisciplinary programs.

As an experienced administrator and an educational leader who has demonstrated a strong understanding of issues students experience in the classroom, a deep commitment to undergraduate education and to improving the educational experience and learning outcomes for students, and an ongoing interest in supporting innovation in curriculum development, Dr. Owen is well equipped to fulfill the responsibilities of the Associate Dean Academic portfolio and to utilize his training in quantitative methods to help shape decision making.
