Congratulations to Professor Maxwell Cameron, who has recently been announced as the President-Elect of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA) for 2024/25!
Professor Cameron is excited to begin his tenure and continue LASA‘s mission to foster intellectual discussion, promote the interests of its diverse membership, and encourage civic engagement through network building and public debate.
“This mission has never been more important,” says Cameron. “LASA has been a crucial space for dialogue for academics threatened by repression and dictatorship.”
“We need to bring the same urgency to sustaining academic exchanges and civic engagement in the face of today’s challenges as we have in the past.”
As President-Elect, Cameron hopes to organize a major congress and respond to opportunities in a way that strengthens the importance of LASA to the professional identity of its members and empowers them to contribute and enhance their relevance and impact of their work.
“My commitment is to approach all of the various roles of the president in ways that foster civil discourse, diversity, good listening, and above all respect and empathy,” he wrote in his candidacy statement.
“My vision of our association is a place where everyone contributes and everyone has a home.”
LASA is the largest professional association in the world for individuals and institutions engaged in the study of Latin America. With over 13,000 members, LASA brings together experts on Latin America from all disciplines and diverse occupational endeavors across the globe.
As Vice President/President-Elect, Professor Cameron will sit on LASA’s Executive Council, which is responsible for overseeing the interests of the Association. The council will take on their responsibilities on June 2024 after LASA’s International Hybrid Congress LASA2024.
